A minibus carrying truck drivers crashed into a shuttle train at the Channel Tunnel's loading terminal in Coquelles, near Calais in northern France, on Thursday evening, injuring 19 people, the BBC and Euronews reported.
The bus driver and 18 passengers were hurt, French authorities said, according to the BBC. The driver and one passenger were seriously injured and taken away by helicopter, the BBC reported. The other 17 were taken to hospitals in the region, the Guardian reported. None of the injuries were life-threatening, a local official said, according to the BBC.
The crash happened at 7:27 p.m. local time, or 1:27 p.m. ET, the BBC reported. The minibus was carrying workers who were about to board a Le Shuttle train, which carries vehicles through the tunnel between France and England.
"For a reason that currently remains unknown, the minibus collided with the departing train," local official Agathe Cury said, according to the BBC. "The bus did not overturn, it is still upright – but the shock and the collision caused injuries to the people involved."
Cury said it was "the first time an incident of this type has occurred" on a Eurotunnel loading platform, the BBC reported. Freight and Eurostar passenger traffic through the tunnel was not disrupted after a brief stop to evacuate the injured, she said, according to the BBC.
The local prefecture said "no deaths are to be reported at this stage and no lives are in danger," Euronews reported. Cury said a judicial investigation had been opened, Euronews reported.
The BBC's Evan Davis, who was traveling through the tunnel at the time, said he saw emergency vehicles at the scene but that cars were still going through check-in.
