Porsche plans to reveal a new mid-engined supercar concept called the Mission S on Thursday, Road & Track and Paul Tan reported. The reveal is set for New York at 10:30 p.m. Central European time, or 4:30 p.m. ET, Paul Tan reported.

Porsche announced the concept on Oct. 7 as part of a new long-term plan, Paul Tan reported. The company said it is building a supercar platform for a model line that will sit above the famous 911.

"We are developing a super sports car platform, and we intend to use it as the basis for a new mid-engined car, a car that will sit clearly above the 911," Porsche CEO Michael Leiters said, Paul Tan reported.

Porsche has been sharing teasers on Instagram for more than a week, Paul Tan reported. The first video was captioned "Welcome Mission S. Our love letter to the sports car."

Later teasers showed a gauge with a needle that sweeps to an 8,000 rpm redline, both outlets reported. Another showed a car key, Road & Track reported. That hints at an old-style key starter, which Porsches have not had in some time.

The newest teaser shows the car from above under a tight cover, both outlets reported. A raised section on the roof looks like an air scoop to feed an engine behind the seats.

Porsche has not said what powers the car, Paul Tan reported. Leiters has said the model will use only combustion engines, according to Autocar, Paul Tan reported.

The 8,000 rpm redline does not match any of Porsche's current high-performance engines, Road & Track reported. That raises the chance of an all-new engine.

Porsche has made only two mid-engined models that could be called supercars, Road & Track reported. They are the Carrera GT from the mid-2000s and the 918 from the mid-2010s.

The Mission S may not be a production car, Road & Track noted. But Porsche rarely shows a concept that does not lead to one. The Mission E concept, for example, became the Taycan electric car.

Many questions remain, including how many seats the car will have and whether it will use a hybrid system, Road & Track reported.

What we know: Porsche says the Mission S previews a mid-engined car that will sit above the 911.
What we don't: What engine it uses and whether it will become a production car.
