Peralta, Hicks lift Rays past Guardians 3-1 to even ALCS
Freddy Peralta threw six scoreless innings and Liam Hicks drove in two runs after a José Ramírez error as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 on Tuesday night. The AL Championship Series is tied 1-1. Game 3 is Thursday in Cleveland.
Freddy Peralta dominated and the Tampa Bay Rays evened the American League Championship Series on Tuesday night, beating the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 at Tropicana Field, the AP reported.
Peralta allowed four hits over six scoreless innings, walked two and struck out six. He threw the hardest pitch of his career at 99.4 mph and used his four-seam fastball on 71 of 99 pitches. His average fastball velocity was 96.9 mph, 2.6 mph above his season mark. "It's no secret that I trust in my fastball a lot and it's my best pitch," he said, the AP reported.
The Rays scored all three runs in the fourth. After a replay challenge kept Victor Mesa Jr. on base, Chandler Simpson beat out a chopper and Ben Williamson's grounder skipped through José Ramírez at third for an error that scored Mesa. Liam Hicks then singled to right-center, driving in Simpson and Williamson for a 3-0 lead before a crowd of 32,125.
Cleveland got on the board in the seventh when Chase DeLauter doubled home a run. Ian Seymour and closer Bryan Baker finished it. Baker threw a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the postseason. Rookie lefty Parker Messick took the loss after the unearned runs.
CBS Sports said the ball got through Ramírez's legs on what would have been the third out of the fourth inning. Peralta posted a 4.99 ERA with the Mets before his deadline trade to Tampa Bay, CBS Sports noted. Game 3 is Thursday night at Progressive Field.
