New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and her Republican challenger, Bruce Blakeman, faced off Tuesday night in the only debate of the governor's race, the New York Post reported.

Hochul, a Democrat, spent much of the hour tying Blakeman to President Donald Trump, both outlets reported. Trump has backed Blakeman and campaigned with him, the Post said. Hochul named Trump more than a dozen times, according to the Post.

"That's all you can talk about," Blakeman said, the Post reported.

Blakeman is the Nassau County executive. He mostly attacked Hochul's record, Politico reported. The outlet said the debate showed two different plans. Hochul is betting voters will reject a close Trump ally. Blakeman is betting they are tired of a governor who has led the state for five years.

The two sparred over costs, crime, data centers and immigration, Politico reported.

Blakeman went after the state's sanctuary rules on immigration, the Post reported. He brought up a shooting by federal immigration agents in the Bronx last week. He also said New Yorkers pay too much in taxes and utility bills, the Post said.

Blakeman also put some space between himself and Trump. He said he supports abortion rights, the Post reported.

Late in the debate, Blakeman attacked New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Hochul ally, the Post said. He called the mayor antisemitic. But he praised Mamdani for keeping Jessica Tisch as police commissioner. "I have a lot of confidence in Jessica Tisch," Blakeman said, according to the Post.

Hochul said she backs a new city plan to phase out horse carriages, the Post reported. Blakeman said he would study it.

What we know: Hochul focused on Trump, and Blakeman focused on her record and costs.
What we don't: Whether the debate will move voters in a close race.
