Hungary scraps most of Orban's anti-LGBTQ law
Hungary's parliament voted 139-51 on Tuesday to repeal most of a 2021 law that limited LGBTQ content for children, Deutsche Welle reported. The law was passed under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The EU then unfroze 4.2 billion euros in funds for Hungary, Deutsche Welle said.
Hungary's parliament on Tuesday repealed most of a 2021 law that targeted LGBTQ people, Deutsche Welle reported.
The "child protection" law limited the "portrayal" or "promotion" of sexual and gender diversity in content children could see, Deutsche Welle said. Under it, even age-appropriate books on those topics could only be sold in black plastic wrap with warnings.
Lawmakers voted 139 to 51 for the change, Deutsche Welle and Agence Europe reported. The amendment keeps only the part that protects people under 18 from sexually explicit or violent material, Deutsche Welle said. The European Court of Justice ruled in April that the law broke EU treaties.
Orban was voted out of office in April. His successor, Peter Magyar, is also a conservative, but he promised to break with Orban's policies on media and the courts, Deutsche Welle reported.
The EU moved quickly. "We welcome this important signal of commitment for our common values," EU commissioners Michael McGrath and Hadja Lahbib said, Deutsche Welle reported. The bloc then unfroze 4.2 billion euros in funding for Hungary, Deutsche Welle said.
On the same day, EU ministers reviewed rule-of-law concerns about Hungary, Agence Europe reported. EU budget commissioner Piotr Serafin said measures taken against Hungary under the bloc's budget rules could be lifted. But a separate EU rule-of-law case against Hungary, opened in 2018, stays open, Agence Europe said.
Some limits remain even after the vote, Agence Europe reported. They cover legal recognition of gender identity, adoption by same-sex couples and rules that have let officials ban Pride marches.
What we know: Hungary repealed most of its 2021 anti-LGBTQ law, and the EU released 4.2 billion euros in funds.
What we don't: Whether Hungary will also change its rules on Pride marches and gender recognition.
