Hulu has picked up Ryan Coogler's reboot of "The X-Files" to series, Variety, Deadline and ABC News reported on Tuesday.

The new show is a reimagining of the 1990s science-fiction drama created by Chris Carter. It stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as "two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena," according to the official logline. Deadwyler and Patel will play new characters, not new versions of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, Variety reported, citing a source.

Coogler wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot. He will be an executive producer of the series with showrunner Jennifer Yale. Carter is also an executive producer. Deadwyler and Patel both serve as co-executive producers.

"I've loved 'The X-Files' for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me," Coogler said, Variety reported. He said the team wanted to honor the original "while also finding our own way into that world."

The order caps a journey of more than three years for the project, Deadline reported. It falls under Coogler's five-year exclusive TV deal with Disney, the parent company of Hulu and ABC News. Guest stars include Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi and Ben Foster, ABC News reported.

The original "X-Files" ran for 11 seasons on Fox, ABC News reported. It earned 61 Emmy nominations and 15 wins, Variety reported. Deadwyler and Patel worked together before on the series "Station Eleven." No premiere date has been announced.

What we know: Hulu has ordered a new "X-Files" series from Coogler, starring Deadwyler and Patel.
