Walmart to give workers 250-plus drugs at no cost in 2027
Walmart says it will cover more than 250 prescription drugs at no cost for U.S. workers in its health plans starting in 2027, including some insulin and inhalers, and workers with Type 2 diabetes can get GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic free, but not for weight loss.
Walmart will cover more than 250 prescription drugs at no cost for workers in its health plans starting in 2027, CNBC and Business Insider reported on Tuesday. The list includes some insulin and inhalers.
Workers with Type 2 diabetes will also be able to get GLP-1 drugs at no cost after a new prior authorization, both outlets reported. CNBC said that includes Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro.
But Walmart still will not cover the drugs for weight loss, CNBC reported. Other large employers also do not cover them for obesity or have recently dropped that coverage to hold down costs, CNBC said. Business Insider said Starbucks recently cut back its coverage of the drugs for weight loss.
Walmart is the biggest private employer in the U.S., with about 1.6 million workers in the country, both outlets reported.
The company is also adding other benefits. Workers can get up to 12 weeks of paid leave if their newborn needs care in a neonatal intensive care unit, both outlets reported. Business Insider said that leave can be added to up to 16 weeks of existing paid maternity and parental leave.
Workers in most plans will also be able to get a second opinion from specialists for rare conditions such as ALS, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease, both outlets reported.
The starting health plan will cost $39.80 per pay period, up $1.50, both outlets reported. Full-time and part-time workers who average more than 30 hours a week can enroll, Business Insider reported.
"The steps we're taking are based on years of planning and trying new things, which is allowing us to make meaningful improvements for associates without slashing benefits or significantly raising premiums," Walmart said in a statement to CNBC.
Open enrollment for Walmart workers closes on Nov. 6, CNBC reported.
