Russian missiles hit Kyiv power plant as Ukraine again gets no warning
Russian ballistic missiles hit Kyiv late Tuesday, striking the CHPP-4 power plant and a nine-story apartment building, where one person was killed. Zelensky said Ukraine again got no early warning from its partners. Hours earlier, President Trump would not say whether Russia broke his energy truce, and said the U.S. is still sharing intelligence with Ukraine.
Russian ballistic missiles hit Kyiv late Tuesday, Oct. 13, moments after an air raid alert, the Kyiv Independent reported. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the main target was the CHPP-4 power plant, one of the city's key energy sites. "Unfortunately, it was hit," he said, Ukrainska Pravda reported. A nine-story apartment building in the Desnianskyi district was struck and set on fire. One person was killed and four were injured there, city officials said, according to the Kyiv Independent. UNN said a warehouse was also hit.
Zelensky said partners once again gave no early warning, and that Ukraine's systems spotted the missiles only as they neared Kyiv, Ukrainska Pravda and UNN reported. "The facts show that the Russians do not consider themselves bound by what the president of the United States said," he said, according to Ukrainska Pravda. Presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn said it was the second day in a row without the usual warning, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Hours earlier, President Donald Trump would not say whether Russia had broken the energy ceasefire he announced over the weekend. Asked if Russia violated it, he said, "I'll let you know about that later," the Kyiv Independent reported. "They're hitting each other, but it will all come to an end," he added, Just the News reported.
Trump also said the U.S. has not stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine. "We are helping them, and we are sharing intel. We want the war to end," he told reporters at the White House, Politico Europe reported. AP reported the same remarks.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that contacts on a possible energy ceasefire were continuing. He said nothing had changed since Monday, according to TASS. Peskov has also said Russia wants lasting peace rather than a ceasefire, TASS reported.
Russia's defense ministry made no mention of Ukrainian energy sites in its overnight strike summary, France 24 reported, citing Reuters. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine had not struck Russian refineries for two days, but that Russia hit six Ukrainian energy sites, France 24 reported.
Late Monday, Ukraine's Air Force said Russia fired about six ballistic missiles at Kyiv. One hit a transport site and another hit a warehouse, the Kyiv Post and UNN reported. Zelensky said Tuesday that Ukraine received no early warning from its partners about what he called a "particularly vile" strike. He said such intelligence "helps save lives," AP and AAP reported.
