Morocco's election winner forms four-party coalition behind first woman leader
Morocco's Authenticity and Modernity Party has agreed to form a coalition government with three other parties. Together they hold 207 of 395 seats in parliament. Party leader Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri is the first woman to serve as Morocco's head of government.
Morocco's Authenticity and Modernity Party, known as PAM, has agreed to form a coalition government with three other parties, Reuters and Morocco World News reported.
PAM came first in the Sept. 23 parliamentary election, winning 97 seats, Morocco World News reported. King Mohammed VI then named party leader Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri head of government. She is the first woman to hold the post.
The new coalition includes the nationalist Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces and the Party of Progress and Socialism. Together the four parties hold 207 seats in parliament, above the 198 needed for a majority, Reuters reported.
The parties said the deal "produces a strong political government," Reuters reported. They said they would next propose people for cabinet posts and write a government program as soon as possible. El Mansouri held two rounds of talks with parties before reaching the deal, Morocco World News reported.
PAM was founded in 2008 by an adviser to the king. It has positioned itself as a counterweight to the Islamist Justice and Development Party, Reuters reported.
The new government will oversee the final stages of a $20 billion push to prepare for the 2030 World Cup. Morocco will co-host the event with Portugal and Spain. It also faces pressure to address young people's complaints about jobs, schools and health care, which fueled protests last year, Reuters reported.
The vote is not expected to change Morocco's direction much. The country is a constitutional monarchy, and the king keeps wide powers over foreign policy and defense.
What we know: Four parties with 207 of 395 seats will form Morocco's next government under El Mansouri.
What we don't: Who will fill the cabinet posts and what the government program will include.
