South Australia to get Australia's first Michelin Guide
South Australia will become the first part of Australia covered by the Michelin Guide, with its first picks revealed at a ceremony in Adelaide on Wednesday evening, local time. Anonymous inspectors have been dining across the state. Any restaurant that earns a star would be an Australian first.
South Australia will become the first place in Australia to feature in the Michelin Guide, ABC News Australia reported. The state's first restaurant picks will be revealed at a ceremony on Wednesday evening, local time.
Anonymous Michelin inspectors have been dining at restaurants across the state, the ABC reported. If any restaurant earns a Michelin Star, it will be an Australian first. The guide will cover restaurants across South Australia, not just Adelaide, Glam Adelaide reported.
The ceremony will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre and livestreamed, Glam Adelaide said. Possible honors include one, two or three stars, as well as the Bib Gourmand for good food at a moderate price. Chefs at restaurants that win stars will get special Michelin chef jackets.
Michelin first approached Tourism Australia in 2016, but the national agency decided against it, the ABC reported. South Australia's government went its own way and is paying for the guide. It has not said how much. "It goes beyond the benefits of the plate," Tourism Minister Emily Bourke said, according to the ABC. She said it would help "put us on the world map."
In July, New Zealand became the first place in Oceania to get a Michelin Star, the ABC reported.
Duncan Welgemoed, who owns the Adelaide restaurant Africola, said the guide would be a game changer for the industry. "Overnight your bookings will increase significantly," he told the ABC.
Not everyone is a fan. Catheryn Khoo, a professor at Torrens University, told the ABC that some chefs have returned their stars because of pressure on restaurant teams. She urged chefs to "do what they do best instead of focusing on the Michelin Guide."
