Long Beach readies repairs after Rachel's waves wreck beach homes
Crews in Long Beach, California, were set to begin emergency repairs on Tuesday to a boardwalk and seawall smashed by waves from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel. At least 13 beachfront homes have been declared unsafe to live in by city officials. The city says repairs could cost up to $3.6 million.
Crews in Long Beach, California, were set to begin emergency repairs on Tuesday to a damaged boardwalk and seawall on the city's Peninsula, Fox 11 Los Angeles reported. The work, set for low tide between 64th and 66th Places on Seaside Walk, follows days of huge waves from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel.
Rachel hit Mexico's Baja California, southern California and Las Vegas over the weekend, the Guardian reported. It weakened before it reached California, but it still did serious damage. Waves smashed into homes, tore up a boardwalk and forced people to leave.
At least 13 homes have been red-tagged, meaning no one may live in them, Fox 11 and NBC reported. Inspectors said the number could change.
The cost of the local repairs has climbed from about $1 million to between $1.5 million and $3.6 million, Fox 11 reported. The money will come from a city emergency fund. The city has handed out about 19,000 sandbags during this storm. Workers are also clearing drains, running pumps and building sand walls.
Evacuation warnings remain in place for some streets, and the Peninsula is closed to people who do not live there. Work to stage a large beach rebuilding project is set to start on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
"We're not out of the woods yet. But we are beginning the work toward recovery," Mayor Rex Richardson said, Fox 11 reported.
Farther south, Newport Beach declared a local emergency and briefly closed its piers, the Guardian reported.
What we know: Emergency repairs were set to begin Tuesday, and several Peninsula homes are unsafe to live in.
