HBO is reviving "Girls," Lena Dunham's comedy about four friends in New York, for a limited run of five episodes, Variety and Deadline reported on Tuesday.

The original series ran on HBO from 2012 to 2017. Dunham created it, wrote and directed it and starred as Hannah Horvath. Production on the new episodes will begin in 2027, a decade after the Season 6 finale.

The four main stars are all returning. Dunham will again play Hannah, Allison Williams will play Marnie, Jemima Kirke will play Jessa and Zosia Mamet will play Shoshanna. Andrew Rannells is also back as Elijah. The news came in a short video in which Dunham calls her co-stars to ask if they are free next summer.

Adam Driver, who played Hannah's boyfriend Adam, is not part of the announcement, Deadline reported. Jenni Konner, who ran the show with Dunham, is also not returning.

"We always said we would only return to 'Girls' if there was a specific story we were burning to tell," Dunham said in a statement, Variety reported. She said the characters "started talking to me in the shower" around her 40th birthday.

Amy Gravitt, who leads comedy programming at HBO, said fans would be glad to see how the characters have grown, Deadline reported.

Judd Apatow will return as an executive producer. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells will serve as co-executive producers. Dunham has long said she would come back to the show if there was something new to say about the characters as they get older.

What we know: HBO ordered five new episodes, with the main cast back and filming set for 2027.
What we don't: When the episodes will air and what the story will be.
