England women thrash Greece 5-0 to set up Ukraine playoff
England's women defeated Greece 5-0 in Leicester on Tuesday, winning their World Cup playoff tie 8-1 on aggregate. Alessia Russo and Lauren James each scored twice, and Georgia Stanway added a powerful header. England will now face Ukraine over two matches for a place at next year's Women's World Cup.
England's women's team defeated Greece 5-0 on Tuesday night in the second leg of a World Cup qualifying playoff at the King Power Stadium in Leicester. England won the tie 8-1 on aggregate, after a less convincing 3-1 victory in Crete on Friday.
Alessia Russo and Lauren James each scored twice, and Georgia Stanway added another goal, Sky Sports reported. Russo opened the scoring in the third minute, after James drove through midfield and set her up. Stanway then headed in a cross from Lauren Hemp, and James scored twice before half-time. Russo completed the victory in the second half, finishing from a tight angle.
Stanway thought she had scored a second goal soon after the break, but video review ruled it out for offside, Sky Sports said. Manager Sarina Wiegman also handed international debuts to two young players, Lexi Potter and Freya Godfrey.
England had faced criticism for wasting chances during the narrow win in Crete, the Guardian reported, and Wiegman had asked for improvement in the final third. "5-0 is a pretty good score," she said afterward, Sky Sports reported.
Wiegman praised James, who has stayed free of injury this season. "She was really enjoying herself, scored some great goals," Wiegman said, the Guardian reported. Russo said the team had been "ruthless early on," Sky Sports reported.
England will now play Ukraine in the next round of the playoffs, with the two matches scheduled between Nov 26 and Dec 5, Sky Sports said. Ukraine will host the first leg. England defeated Ukraine twice earlier in qualifying, winning 6-1 away and 3-0 at home. The winner of the tie will earn a place at next year's Women's World Cup.
