Seattle's viral raccoon Jimothy is now a $10.99 Costco dog toy
Jimothy, the short-spined raccoon that became a Seattle mascot this summer, is now a dog toy at some Pacific Northwest Costco stores, where the plush toys sold for $10.99 each at the Tukwila warehouse on Monday. Some fans online were upset that the toy is meant for dogs.
Jimothy, the short-spined raccoon that went viral in Seattle this summer, is now a dog toy at Costco, The Seattle Times and KIRO 7 reported.
The plush toys are made by Think Dog by Delca, a pet toy brand. The company said the toys would be sold at Costco stores in the Pacific Northwest starting this week, both outlets reported. The Seattle Times said the news came in an Instagram post. KIRO 7 said the company made the announcement on Friday, Oct. 9.
The Seattle Times said dozens of the toys showed up at the Costco in Tukwila on Monday. That store got a limited supply, and the toys were flying off the shelf for $10.99 each, the paper reported.
For now, the toys are only in Pacific Northwest stores. The brand said the toys will later be sold on Costco.com, both outlets reported. KIRO 7 said that should happen in a few weeks.
Jimothy has become part of Seattle culture in the nearly three months since he first took the internet by storm, KIRO 7 reported. He has shown up on Mariners trading cards and limited-edition shirts and in art contests, the station said. The Seattle Times called him the city's unofficial mascot.
Before the launch, the brand posted photos of Jimothy eating Costco hot dogs and running through a Costco parking lot, The Seattle Times reported.
Not everyone is happy about it. The Seattle Times said some fans online did not like seeing a piece of Seattle lore turned into a product. Others said it seemed harsh to sell a Jimothy toy for dogs to chew on, the paper reported. Still, many people are buying the toys to display at home rather than for their dogs, it said.
