Brits keep taking holidays, but more plan to cut back
Most adults in the UK took a holiday in the past year despite travel disruptions, a new survey from the travel group Abta found. City breaks overtook beach trips as the most popular kind of holiday. But more people say rising living costs will make them spend less on travel next year.
Most people in the UK are still taking holidays despite a year of travel problems, but many are watching their money more closely, Travel Weekly and TTG reported on Tuesday.
The figures come from the Holiday Habits report by Abta, a UK travel trade group. It surveyed more than 2,000 adults over the summer, Travel Weekly reported.
The survey found 88% of UK adults went on holiday in the past 12 months, both outlets reported. TTG said that is on a par with 2019, before the pandemic. Travel Weekly said 62% took a trip abroad, up from 59%.
City breaks overtook beach holidays as the most popular type of trip, both outlets reported. Travel Weekly said 53% had taken a city break, compared with 49% who went to the beach. Spain was the top place to visit, with 36% saying they went there, Travel Weekly reported.
Abta's travel confidence score was plus 50, both outlets reported. That is three points lower than last year. Travel Weekly said the score had dropped to plus 26 in May, which Abta linked to the Middle East conflict, worries about fuel, and new border checks in Europe.
People are also more careful with money. Of the 15% who said they will spend less on holidays next year, 52% said the main reason was the cost of living, Travel Weekly reported.
More people are booking through travel agents or tour operators. TTG said 44% of people who used them cited value for money, up from 39%.
"We continue to love our holidays and the desire to travel remains strong," Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer said, Travel Weekly reported.
What we know: Most UK adults still took a holiday this year, and city breaks are now the top choice.
What we don't: Whether rising costs will cut into travel next year as much as people expect.
Where outlets agree Travel Weekly and TTG both report that Abta's survey found 88% of UK adults took a holiday in the past year and that city breaks overtook beach holidays as the most popular type.
