President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are considering firing Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, a senior U.S. official told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The official said Trump and Rubio are "extremely pissed off" over reports about her conduct. A decision is likely this week, after Monday's Columbus Day holiday. No firing has been confirmed.

The Wall Street Journal has reported a series of claims about Guilfoyle. They include an alleged threat to a Greek official, accepting improper gifts and services, and offering to use her influence in the administration in return for payment of a large credit card bill.

Fox News reported that the Journal said Guilfoyle asked Trump donor Eric Deters to pay off a $100,000 American Express bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing. She allegedly offered to help him gain access to senior officials. Deters said he never made the payment. Guilfoyle's lawyer, Jesse Binnall, disputed that the messages are real.

Guilfoyle has not addressed the reports directly. Her lawyer says she did nothing wrong.

The official said Rubio was especially angry because he visited Athens last week, and Guilfoyle attended most of his events and greeted him with a bear hug as the reports swirled. On Wednesday, Rubio called her "a strong ambassador." After a new report that night, he told reporters he would not respond to claims he could not confirm.

Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host, was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr.

What we know: Trump and Rubio are weighing whether to fire Guilfoyle after reports of misconduct, with a decision expected this week.
What we don't: Whether she will be removed, and whether the State Department or others will open a formal investigation.
