Ex-Irish Olympic swim coach George Gibney faces sentencing for child abuse
Former Irish Olympic swimming coach George Gibney, 77, is due to be sentenced in Dublin on Monday for abusing four girls in the 1970s and 1980s. A jury convicted him in July of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape. He was extradited last year after 30 years in the U.S.
George Gibney, a former Irish Olympic swimming coach, is due to be sentenced at Dublin's Central Criminal Court on Monday for sexually abusing four girls in the 1970s and 1980s.
In July, a jury convicted Gibney, 77, of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape. It acquitted him of one count. The girls were between 8 and 13 years old at the time, The Irish Times reported. The abuse took place at two swimming pools in County Dublin.
"It's vindication for those children," Evin Daly, a child welfare advocate who helped track Gibney in Florida, told The Guardian. "The abuse shaped some of their lives."
Gibney was once Ireland's most prominent swimming coach and led the country's team at the Olympics. An earlier case against him was halted in 1993. He then left Ireland, worked at a swim club in Edinburgh, and moved to the United States. He lived quietly in Colorado and then Orlando, Florida, for about 30 years.
A 10-part BBC podcast, "Where is George Gibney?", put his name back in the news. Four women who were not part of the 1990s case then came forward to Irish police. Gibney was extradited to Ireland last year.
During the trial, reporting limits meant he could be called only a "sports coach." Those limits were lifted after the guilty verdicts, so he can now be named. His lawyers had raised concerns about jurors who had heard the podcast.
The sentencing caps a decades-long push by victims, police and journalists to bring him to court.
