Trump says Ukraine needs a new president after diesel deal clash
President Trump said Saturday it is "time for Ukraine to get a new president." He spoke after Volodymyr Zelensky called the new U.S. deal for Russian diesel a gift to Vladimir Putin. Trump blamed Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries for high U.S. diesel prices.
President Donald Trump said Saturday that Ukraine should replace its president, a day after Volodymyr Zelensky attacked a U.S. deal to buy Russian diesel.
"I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal because he could have made many deals and for some reason he never does," Trump told reporters outside the White House. "I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new president."
On Friday Trump announced that Russia would release millions of tons of diesel to the U.S. and world markets. The Treasury Department issued a temporary license that eases sanctions on Russian diesel. Trump said the deal would bring down fuel prices before the November midterm elections.
Zelensky called the deal a "gift" to Putin. He said Russia would use the money to keep fighting, and that "any easing of sanctions" would let it "kill more, wage war for longer," The Guardian reported. Hours later, a Russian strike killed at least 20 people in Zaporizhzhia. Zelensky said it was Russia saying "thanks."
Trump blamed Kyiv for the high price of diesel. He said Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries hurt "our farmers, our ranchers." "He'd better damn well stop," Trump said, according to the BBC.
Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia invaded in 2022, so elections are on hold. Ukraine's foreign minister said Zelensky had the backing of the Ukrainian people, CBS News reported. The deal also appeared to blindside Kyiv. It was announced while Ukrainian negotiators were in Miami for peace talks.
Global fuel supplies are tight because the Iran war has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz.
