Netflix has used AI on about 300 titles, executive says
Netflix has used AI in some form on about 300 titles, a senior production executive said at the Busan International Film Festival. He said AI helps with planning, set design, editing and effects but that the "human touch is critical." A Korean director on the panel said AI could cut film budgets by 30% to 40%.
Netflix has quietly used artificial intelligence on hundreds of its shows and films.
The streamer has used AI in some form on about 300 titles, Sung Q Lee, Netflix's senior director of production for the Asia-Pacific region, said Saturday at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
"[AI] is being used in previsualization, production design, working out set-dressing concepts ahead of time, in editing and of course in VFX," Lee said. Previsualization means planning scenes before filming.
But Lee stressed that people still matter most. "The question that matters to me isn't, 'How much AI can we put into this title?'" he said. He said the "human touch is critical."
On the same panel, Kang Yoon-sung, director of the Korean film "The Outlaws," made a bolder claim. He said AI workflows could cut a feature film's production budget by 30% to 40%, Variety reported.
The session was titled "Film Production and AI: New Tools, New Possibilities." Netflix and the Motion Picture Association co-hosted it. Kimball Thurston, chief technology officer of the effects company Wētā FX, also spoke.
AI is a hot topic in Hollywood. Studios see a way to save money and time. Many actors, writers and crew members fear it will take their jobs. AI limits were a key issue in the 2023 Hollywood strikes.
Generative AI was a major focus at this year's Busan market, Variety reported in September.
