Eliud Kipchoge says he is not done yet.

The 41-year-old Kenyan won the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 10 seconds, a race record, the Associated Press reported via ABC News. It was his first marathon win since Berlin in September 2023.

He broke the old record by two seconds on a new course, The Guardian reported. And it could have been faster. Kipchoge slowed down to wave to spectators inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where the last half-lap was run.

Former Australian pro cyclist Jimmy Whelan ran with Kipchoge until about 30 kilometers. Then Kipchoge pulled away inside the last 10 kilometers of the 42.2-kilometer race and dominated to the finish.

"My body is still peaking," Kipchoge said, The Guardian reported. He looked as if he had just done a training run. He then spent more than half an hour celebrating with fans.

Kipchoge is widely seen as the greatest marathon runner ever. He won Olympic gold in 2016 and 2020. He is a former world record holder. In 2019 he became the first person to run a marathon distance in under two hours, though that was in a special event that did not count as an official record.

The past few years have been harder. He did not finish the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Many fans wondered if his best days were behind him.

Sunday's win was his debut in Melbourne. It sends a message to younger runners that the veteran can still win races.

What we know: Kipchoge, 41, won Melbourne in a race-record 2:09:10.
What we don't: which marathon he will run next.
