Kentucky stuns No. 10 LSU with a two-point try in overtime
Kentucky beat No. 10 LSU 35-34 in overtime on Saturday when quarterback Kenneth Minchey ran in a two-point conversion. Kentucky forced overtime with a field goal with 12 seconds left. It was LSU's eighth straight road loss in SEC play, hurting its playoff hopes.
Kentucky went for the win in overtime, and got it.
Quarterback Kenneth Minchey ran untouched into the end zone for a two-point conversion to give Kentucky a 35-34 victory over No. 10 LSU on Saturday night in Lexington, the New York Post reported. C.J. Baxter had just scored on a 1-yard run.
"There was nobody in the middle, so I figured I would run there," Minchey said. "We had our play called, and I wasn't necessarily part of it, but that's what my read told me to, so I ran it in."
LSU scored first in overtime on a 15-yard run by quarterback Sam Leavitt.
Kentucky almost did not get to overtime. Kicker Adam Zouagui missed field goals of 42 and 26 yards in the final five minutes. But with 97 seconds left and trailing 27-24, Kentucky took over at its own 19-yard line, CBS Sports reported. The Wildcats drove 63 yards in 1:25. Zouagui then made a 33-yard field goal with 12 seconds left to tie the game.
Kentucky improved to 5-1 and 3-1 in the Southeastern Conference.
LSU fell to 4-2 and 1-2 in the SEC. It was the Tigers' second loss of the season and their eighth straight road loss in conference play, CBS reported. LSU last won an SEC road game on Oct. 19, 2024, at Arkansas.
The loss puts pressure on coach Lane Kiffin, who is in his first season at LSU. Two losses make the Tigers' path to the College Football Playoff much harder.
It was a wild Saturday in the SEC, with Texas also losing to Oklahoma.
