Google Maps data shows frozen yogurt and matcha are back in style
Google Maps released its first Fan-Favorite Dining Lists, built on billions of reviews, ratings and direction searches in 10 cities. Mentions of frozen yogurt in New York reviews jumped 320% over the past year, and matcha surged in nearly every city tracked.
Frozen yogurt is making a comeback, and Google Maps has the data to prove it.
Google Maps has released its first-ever Fan-Favorite Dining Lists, GCN reported. The lists use billions of reviews, ratings and direction searches to spot food trends in 10 cities around the world.
The data, published in a Google blog post on Thursday, found that mentions of frozen yogurt in New York restaurant reviews jumped 320% over the past year. Matcha, the bright green powdered Japanese tea, surged in nearly every city tracked.
The lists cover a full year of Google Maps activity in Atlanta, Chicago, London, Melbourne, Montreal, New York and San Francisco, among others, GCN said.
Customers can now search for restaurants based on direction requests, ratings and reviews, Nation's Restaurant News reported. That means the lists reflect where people actually go, not just what critics recommend.
Frozen yogurt was a huge trend in the late 2000s and early 2010s, with self-serve shops opening on many corners. Many later closed as the fad faded. Now younger diners are discovering it again, often with new toppings and flavors.
Matcha has become a favorite in cafes, appearing in lattes, desserts and even savory dishes. Its popularity has grown so fast that some suppliers in Japan have reported shortages.
For restaurants, the lists could bring more customers. For diners, they offer a new way to find popular spots when traveling.
Restaurant owners say social media also drives food trends. A single viral video can send crowds to a shop overnight.
The lists are searchable in the Google Maps app in the 10 cities covered.
