If you want a PS5 Pro from GameStop right now, a used one will cost you more than a new one.

GameStop is selling used PS5 Pro consoles for $1,399.99, Gear Live reported. Pre-owned special editions are $1,499.99. A new PS5 Pro has a list price of $899.99. That makes the used console about $500 more expensive, or roughly 55% more, Phandroid reported, citing an internal GameStop memo shared on Reddit.

The catch is that new ones are hard to find. GameStop had no new PS5 Pros in stock online, so the used listing was the only option there, Gear Live said. GameStop has not explained the pricing.

Sony faces a global shortage of the console, Engadget reported. The AI boom is eating up the world's supply of computer chips, and Sony has struggled to keep up production. The shortage is likely to last well into 2027.

Prices have also climbed. The PS5 Pro launched at $699.99 in November 2024. Sony has raised the price more than once since then.

Demand is rising as the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 nears. Gamers want the most powerful console to play it, Engadget said.

Used electronics normally sell for less than new ones. Paying a premium for a used console is unusual and shows how tight supplies are.

Experts suggest shoppers compare prices at several stores and watch for restocks before paying a big markup. Buyers should also check return policies and warranties on used gear.

Sony has not said when supply will return to normal.

What we know: GameStop is selling used PS5 Pros for about $1,400, roughly $500 above the new list price, amid a global shortage.
What we don't: Why GameStop set that price and when Sony's supply will return to normal.
