A man shot and killed eight people at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening, then killed himself, police said.

The victims were a 1-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, four women and two young men, CBS News reported. One of the women was pregnant. Seven of the victims were related to the gunman. The eighth was a family friend.

"Eight of those victims were related to each other," Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said at a news conference Saturday. "I think it's too soon to talk about motive." He said mental health may have played a role, The Guardian reported.

Police were called to Perry Street around 5 p.m. after witnesses saw a man firing a gun before he went into a home. Officers found two women dead in the street and six more victims inside. The suspect, 45, was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His name has not been released.

All the deaths happened before officers arrived, Lorah said. Police did not fire. Loud bangs neighbors heard were flash-bangs used by a tactical team. Lorah described an "eerie silence" at the scene. "Some scenes stay with you long after you leave them," he said, DW reported.

Video showed the two women arriving at the home upset and pounding on the door. Investigators believe the gunman came out, argued with them and opened fire.

"What happened to you was horrific," Mayor Daria Devlin told the victims' families. Gov. Josh Shapiro also offered support. The victims have not been named.
