'WandaVision' creator to develop new 'Stargate' series at Amazon
Jac Schaeffer, who created "WandaVision," is developing a new "Stargate" TV series for Amazon MGM Studios. It is Amazon's second try after it dropped an earlier revival in June. The project is still in development, with no cast or date.
Amazon is taking another shot at bringing back "Stargate."
Jac Schaeffer, the creator of Marvel's "WandaVision," is developing a new "Stargate" TV series for Amazon MGM Studios, Variety first reported. The project falls under the overall deal Schaeffer signed with the studio earlier this year. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures will be executive producers. Amazon declined to comment.
This is Amazon's second try at a new "Stargate" show. A series from franchise veteran Martin Gero got an order from Prime Video in November 2025. But in June the studio said it would not move forward, Deadline reported. That show had finished a 20-week writers' room and was in pre-production in the UK when it was pulled.
Fan site GateWorld reported that Harold and Tunnell were also part of Gero's project. It said the earlier show was reportedly dropped after a new executive worried it would not appeal widely enough beyond longtime fans.
Schaeffer is known for genre TV. "WandaVision" was the first Marvel series on Disney+ and earned 23 Emmy nominations. She also created the spinoff "Agatha All Along."
"Stargate" began as a 1994 movie starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. It led to "Stargate SG-1," which ran for 10 seasons from 1997 to 2007, plus "Stargate Atlantis" and "Stargate Universe." Altogether the shows made more than 350 episodes, GateWorld noted.
Amazon bought MGM, the studio that owns "Stargate," for $8.5 billion in 2022. "Stargate" was among the first titles it picked for new projects.
A development deal is not a green light. No cast, plot or premiere date has been announced. GateWorld noted that some past Schaeffer projects passed to others before reaching screens.
What we know: Schaeffer is developing the series with two producers from the earlier attempt.
What we don't: Whether it will reboot the story or continue it.
Where outlets agree Variety and Deadline both report that Schaeffer is developing the series under her Amazon MGM overall deal, with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell as executive producers.
Where they differ Variety reports that a writers' room is expected to open in the near future, while Deadline says one has already opened in New York.
