Another secret recording of Ken Paxton, the Republican running for Senate in Texas, has leaked, and this time he takes aim at a fellow Republican.

"He's clearly not helping. He wants me to lose," Paxton said of Sen. John Cornyn, according to audio CNN obtained from an attendee who opposes Paxton. The Washington Examiner also reported the clip. Paxton beat Cornyn in a bitter primary this year, and while he has said in public that he would "love to have" Cornyn's support, the senator has kept his distance from the campaign.

In the clip, Paxton told a story about a friend who met Cornyn at a Dallas restaurant, and he said Cornyn's face "went red" and that Cornyn said, "Paxton's gonna lose. We need to teach those Republicans a lesson." A Cornyn adviser, Rob Jesmer, told CNN the talk never happened. "If Sen. Cornyn wanted Ken to lose, I can assure you he'd be more active in the campaign," he said.

All the clips come from one Sept. 24 fundraiser hosted by lobbyists in Washington. In a clip released Thursday, Paxton said, "There's no doubt we have to cut some of the mandatory spending," The Texas Tribune reported. "We have to suck it up." About three-quarters of that spending goes to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Paxton did not say what he would cut, but in a statement he said he would protect Social Security and called the reports "cherry-picked audio."

Earlier clips had him saying the party's midterm convention in Dallas "dropped our numbers" and blaming the Iran war and $6 diesel for his troubles, Texas Monthly reported.

Political scientists told The Courier that the steady drip has knocked Paxton off message. A YouGov poll released this week showed Talarico ahead 50% to 44%. Republicans have poured more than $100 million into the race, CNN reported, in a state that has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994.

What we know: At least five clips from one fundraiser have leaked, and Paxton says his words were twisted.
What we don't: Who is leaking them, and whether more are coming.
