Trump names commentator Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary
President Trump has picked conservative commentator Katie Zacharia to be the next White House press secretary, replacing Karoline Leavitt, who left in August. Zacharia now advises Trump's media company, which runs Truth Social. She will be the sixth chief spokesperson across his two terms.
President Donald Trump on Friday named conservative commentator Katie Zacharia as the next White House press secretary.
"It is my Great Honor to have just appointed, as Press Secretary, Katie Zacharia," Trump wrote on Truth Social, NBC News reported. He called her "a loyal and brilliant supporter" and "a devoted fan and member of MAGA."
Zacharia, 42, is a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, which runs Truth Social. She briefly worked as a spokeswoman at the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year, from February to March, the BBC reported. She is a regular guest on Fox News, Fox Business and Newsmax.
She will be the sixth chief spokesperson across Trump's two terms, the BBC said. She replaces Karoline Leavitt, who left the White House in late August, saying she wanted more time with her family.
Zacharia said the job is "the honor of a lifetime." She wrote that she looks "forward to working with the White House press corps, and with reporters across the country."
She has been active in Republican politics for most of her adult life. She interned at the Republican National Committee and at the White House during the George W. Bush years. She is a lawyer who studied at Pepperdine University in California, where she lives with her four children.
The pick comes as Trump complains that his record is not getting across before the midterms. "We're doing a great job in running the country, but we're not doing a good job of public relations," he said at a rally in Oklahoma last week, NBC News reported.
A political scientist told the BBC the choice "speaks to a blurring of the lines between different media types."
Her start date has not been announced.
