Hubert Hurkacz finally beat Novak Djokovic.

The Polish player won 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the Shanghai Masters on Friday night, the ATP Tour reported. It was his first win over Djokovic in nine matches.

Hurkacz, 29, won the Shanghai title in 2023 and has now won eight straight matches there. He served powerfully, winning 82% of points on his first serve, and matched Djokovic from the back of the court. The match took 87 minutes.

Djokovic looked worn out. He won the China Open in Beijing on Tuesday, the 102nd title of his career, and this was his sixth match in 10 days. The ATP described it as a "low-energy performance."

Hurkacz saved two break points early in the third game. After that, he was largely in control.

"It's a special night. I've been playing Novak for like seven years, so it's been unsuccessful," Hurkacz said. "It is a pleasure for me to share a court with him, to play such a legend of the sport."

With the win, Hurkacz became only the fourth player to beat Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic on hard courts. The others are Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev.

Hurkacz has also been dealing with an injury. He retired from his Beijing semifinal against Alex de Minaur with an adductor injury, but looked fresh in Shanghai.

He plays Lorenzo Musetti or Chinese wild card Zhou Yi in the third round. Top-ranked Jannik Sinner is missing the event with a knee injury.

Djokovic's next scheduled event is the Paris Masters in November. He is ninth in the race to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.

What we know: the score and Hurkacz's possible third-round opponents.
What we don't: whether Hurkacz's adductor injury will hold up.
