Shares of CD Projekt, the Polish company behind the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, rose 4.16% on Friday, Bankier.pl reported. The jump came after news that Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action movie set in the game's world.

The stock closed at about 263 zloty a share, INNPoland reported. It had briefly topped that level around 10:30 a.m. It was one of the best performers among Poland's 20 largest listed companies on a strong day for the Warsaw market.

The rise ended two straight losing sessions. The shares had already gained 9.5% between Sept. 11 and Thursday's close, Bankier.pl reported.

Deadline first reported the movie on Thursday. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for the Transformers films, is attached to produce with CD Projekt Red. Michał Nowakowski, the company's joint chief executive, said the studio is "excited about Paramount as a future partner," the BBC reported.

Why would a movie move a game stock? Mikołaj Sobierajski, a stock analyst at the broker XTB, told Bankier.pl that a film opens another way to reach players around the world. If it lifts game sales and brings in new money, he said, the company could argue for a higher value.

The company has seen this before. Netflix's The Witcher series, based on CD Projekt's other big game series, came out in December 2019. Sales of The Witcher 3 game jumped after the show began, INNPoland noted, citing research firm NPD.

The movie is at an early stage, and no director, cast or release date has been named. Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies since its rocky 2020 launch, and its Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million. A second season of the Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is due later this month.

What we know: CD Projekt shares rose about 4% on the movie news, and Paramount is developing the film with the studio.
What we don't: Who will direct or star, and when the movie could reach theaters.
