Americans plan more vacations, cutting elsewhere to pay for them
A big new travel survey finds Americans expect to take about four vacations and spend $5,655 on leisure travel over the next year. Many plan to stay in the U.S., travel off-peak or trim other spending to afford those trips.
Prices are high, but many Americans still plan to travel. That is the main finding of a large fall survey from travel marketing firm MMGY.
The company interviewed 4,500 U.S. adults for its Portrait of American Travelers report. People said they expect to spend $5,655 on leisure travel over the next 12 months. They expect to take 3.9 vacations, up from 3.5 in the summer survey, Travel Daily News reported.
Travelers are making trade-offs to keep those trips. Some 64% said they will stay in the U.S. to keep costs down. About 35% plan to travel during slower, off-peak times. And 32% said they are cutting spending in other parts of their lives to pay for vacations.
The gap between groups is wide. Baby boomers expect to spend $8,796 on travel in the next year. Gen Z travelers expect to spend just $2,195, TravelAge West reported. Income makes a big difference too.
"Americans continue to tell us that travel is something they're willing to protect, even when household budgets are under pressure," said Simon Moriarty of MMGY.
More people are using artificial intelligence to plan trips. About 51% of leisure travelers have tried it, up 11 points from a year earlier. That rises to 71% among Gen Z and 68% among households with children. But only 4% rank AI among their first three planning steps, so most use it for ideas rather than booking.
National parks remain popular. Among travelers interested in parks, 75% named Yellowstone and 66% the Grand Canyon.
The findings come as holiday airfares hit their highest level in a decade, which may test how far families will stretch.
What we know: Americans say they will take more trips but are traveling closer to home and off-peak to save.
What we don't: Whether higher holiday fares will force more people to cancel plans.
