The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are winless no more after beating the Dallas Cowboys 24-16 on Thursday night at AT&T Stadium, a result that improved them to 1-4 and dropped Dallas to 2-3.

The surprise star was Jalon Daniels, an undrafted rookie from Kansas making just his second NFL start, who completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown, ran for 23 more yards, and did not turn the ball over. He is filling in for Baker Mayfield, who is expected to miss at least one more game with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand, The Associated Press reported.

Daniels became only the second undrafted quarterback to start and beat the Cowboys, NFL.com reported, joining Washington's Ed Rubbert, whose 1987 win during a players' strike helped inspire the movie "The Replacements."

Bucky Irving carried the offense. He ran for a career-high 165 yards and scored twice, once on a 5-yard catch and once on a short run. His 72-yard dash on the first play of the second half set up a 14-yard touchdown run by receiver Emeka Egbuka that gave Tampa Bay the lead for good.

The Bucs' opening drive alone lasted 10 minutes and 58 seconds, which was the team's longest drive by time since 2007, according to NFL Research.

Dallas struggled on both sides of the ball, as Dak Prescott completed 24 of 42 passes for 316 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, both on passes tipped by his own receivers, USA Today reported. The Cowboys turned the ball over three times, and star receiver CeeDee Lamb left with a quad injury after catching one pass in the first half.

Dallas made it close late. Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles went for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1 and was stopped, and Prescott then led a 99-yard touchdown drive. A failed two-point try and Alex Anzalone's interception on a tipped pass sealed the game.

Bowles was also seen down on one knee on the sideline near the end of the game, which NFL.com described as a concerning scene.

The Cowboys next host the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, October 18, on NBC.

What we know: Tampa Bay won 24-16 behind Daniels and Irving.
What we don't: When Mayfield returns, and how serious Lamb's quad injury is.
