House Democrats want records from Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, after a donor said she asked him to pay her $100,000 American Express bill.

Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, sent her a letter Thursday, PBS News reported. He asked for her personal financial records and two years of messages with the donor and with Trump officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel and former Attorney General Pam Bondi. He set an Oct. 22 deadline.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the claims Wednesday. The donor, Eric Deters, is a Trump supporter and former congressional candidate. He said he promised her as much as $1 million if she helped get his legal and tax problems in front of top officials.

Days before her confirmation hearing, she texted him: "Honey please I need you to get this done for me today." In another message she wrote, "It won't show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express." Deters did not pay.

"There was no question it was a quid pro quo," Deters told CNN. He said she "never came through on anything."

Guilfoyle's lawyer told the Journal she disputes that the messages are real. The lawyer said she had been paid to speak at events before she was nominated.

Top officials kept their distance. Vice President JD Vance said, "Obviously I don't love that," but added that he could not say the case was what reporters described. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, visiting Greece with Guilfoyle beside him, would not comment. "It's not the gospel for me," he told reporters, the Washington Examiner reported. A day earlier he had praised her as "a strong ambassador."

Guilfoyle is a former Fox News host who was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr. Trump nominated her in December 2024.

What we know: Deters says he got the texts, and he did not send the money.
What we don't: Whether Guilfoyle will turn over the records Democrats asked for by Oct. 22.
