Other Mommy eyes $20 million opening; Social Reckoning tracks near $8 million
The horror film Other Mommy, starring Jessica Chastain, is on track for about $20 million this weekend, Variety and Deadline report. Sony's Social Reckoning, a follow-up to The Social Network, should open near $7 million to $8 million. Early shows for both films start Thursday afternoon.
Horror is set to lead the box office this weekend. Universal and Blumhouse's Other Mommy is tracking for about $20 million from roughly 3,200 theaters in North America, according to Variety and Deadline. Sony's Social Reckoning is expected to open far lower, near $7 million to $8 million.
Other Mommy stars Jessica Chastain. Rob Savage directed it, and James Wan's Atomic Monster produced it. The R-rated film cost about $18 million to make, Variety said, while Deadline put the net budget at $19 million. Its trailer drew 242 million views, Deadline reported. Shows begin at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Chastain has done well in horror before. Mama opened to $28.4 million, and It Chapter Two opened to $91 million, Deadline noted.
Social Reckoning faces a tougher road. Sony calls it a "companion piece" to The Social Network, which opened to $22 million 16 years ago and earned $224 million worldwide, Variety said. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. Mikey Madison plays an engineer who leaks to a Wall Street Journal reporter, played by Jeremy Allen White. The film holds a 64% score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared with 96% for The Social Network, Deadline reported. It opens in about 2,200 theaters, with previews at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Cost is a worry. Variety put Sony's spending at $30 million. Deadline said the net cost runs from $30 million to $42 million, with Alcon paying half.
Holdovers will matter too. Verity, which opened last weekend, is expected to fall to about $12 million, Deadline said, while Variety projected $13 million to $16 million. Tom Cruise's Digger should add about $4 million in its second weekend, Variety said, and The Odyssey returns to IMAX screens.
Other new choices are on the way. Angel Studios' Angel and the Badman opens in about 2,000 theaters, and a 20th-anniversary rerelease of Pan's Labyrinth plays at 1,008 locations, Deadline reported.
