Dream beat Liberty in overtime, sit one win from WNBA Finals
The Atlanta Dream beat the New York Liberty 101-98 in overtime Wednesday to take a 2-0 lead in their WNBA semifinal, even without top scorer Allisha Gray. Atlanta is one win from its first Finals since 2013. Game 3 is Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET in Brooklyn on ESPN2, and Gray is day-to-day.
The Atlanta Dream are one win from their first WNBA Finals since 2013. Angel Reese scored 23 points, and Naz Hillmon made the go-ahead layup with 20.8 seconds left in overtime as Atlanta beat the New York Liberty 101-98 on Wednesday night, AP reported. The Dream lead the best-of-five semifinal 2-0.
Atlanta did it without guard Allisha Gray, its leading scorer. Gray hurt her left shooting hand in Game 1 and is day-to-day, ESPN said. Coach Karl Smesko had ruled her out of Game 2 on Tuesday after an X-ray on her finger, but he shared no more details.
Reese scored six of Atlanta's 13 points in overtime. She sealed the game with two free throws with 4.3 seconds left, right after Sabrina Ionescu threw a pass out of bounds. Jordin Canada also scored 23 points and had eight assists.
New York's Breanna Stewart scored 35 points, including 25 in the first half. She missed a desperation shot on the final play.
The Liberty nearly won it in regulation. Down 86-80 with under two minutes left, they cut the lead with an Ionescu 3 and a Stewart layup. Marine Fauthoux then hit a tying 3-pointer with 10.3 seconds to go. Rhyne Howard's floater rimmed out at the buzzer.
Turnovers hurt New York again. The Liberty shot 55% from the field, ESPN noted, but took 20 fewer shots than Atlanta. The Dream scored 28 points off 17 New York turnovers.
The matchup has been a surprise. Atlanta is the No. 4 seed, and New York reached the semifinals as the No. 8 seed. The Dream won Game 1 92-82 on Sunday, the game in which Gray got hurt.
Game 3 is Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, on ESPN2. It is a must-win for the Liberty. A Dream win would send Atlanta to the Finals.
