ChatGPT's free users get GPT-6 and its new visual answers Thursday
OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT on Wednesday with a feature called Intelligent UI, which answers questions with charts, diagrams, buttons and small built-in tools. Free and low-cost Go users get it Thursday, so a huge number of everyday users will see the change. Paying Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise customers got it first.
ChatGPT is about to look very different for millions of people. OpenAI began rolling out its GPT-6 model in ChatGPT on Wednesday, along with a feature it calls Intelligent UI. Paying Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users got it first, and free and Go users get it on Thursday, The Verge and TechCrunch reported.
Intelligent UI lets the chatbot answer with more than words. It can mix text with diagrams, charts, forms and tappable buttons. In one example OpenAI shared, ChatGPT drew a seven-speed bicycle with buttons that highlight each part. In another, it taught Mahjong by laying out the tiles in groups a user can scroll through.
It can also build small tools on the spot, such as a retirement savings calculator, a retro game or a bill splitter, The Verge reported. OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to decide when a picture works better than text.
"The most helpful answers aren't just text," said Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, during a demo for reporters. He showed how ChatGPT could explain how an airplane wing creates lift with a set of diagrams, TechCrunch reported.
Users who want fewer visuals can turn them down, the same way they can adjust other parts of ChatGPT's personality.
There are two versions of the model. Paying users get GPT-6 Sol, a mid-range model. Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna, which is built to be more efficient. OpenAI says GPT-6 also runs better web searches, gives quicker partial answers while it keeps looking, and showed "stronger resistance to attempts to bypass its safety training."
OpenAI announced its first GPT-6 models last month. This week's step brings them to the main ChatGPT app for everyone. OpenAI's help page says the feature works on the web and updated apps, but older Mac and Windows desktop apps do not support it.
The bigger goal, OpenAI says, is to make complex topics easier to learn. It may also help ChatGPT reach people who find long blocks of text hard to use, though the company did not say so directly, TechCrunch noted.
What we know: GPT-6 and Intelligent UI reach free ChatGPT users Thursday.
What we don't: How often the model will pick visuals over text, and how well its built-in tools work.
Where outlets agree The Verge and TechCrunch both report GPT-6 with Intelligent UI went to paying tiers Wednesday and reaches free and Go users Thursday.
Where they differ OpenAI pitches the visuals as a learning aid, but it has not shown how reliable the tools ChatGPT builds on the fly will be.
