Alex Ovechkin's last home opener ended with a win. Tom Wilson had a goal and two assists, and the Washington Capitals beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 on Wednesday at Capital One Arena, NHL.com and AP reported. It was Ovechkin's final NHL home opener.

The Capitals scored fast. Anthony Beauvillier beat goalie Arturs Silovs on a backhand breakaway just 23 seconds into the game. It was the 300th point of his NHL career.

Pittsburgh answered quickly. Bryan Rust tied it at 1:19, muscling around a defender and scoring off goalie Logan Thompson. Rust had missed the first three games with an upper-body injury from the preseason.

Washington then took over. Pierre-Luc Dubois set up Wilson with a no-look pass for a 2-1 lead. Dubois scored early in the second period after a Silovs turnover, and Alex Tuch made it 4-1 on a 2-on-0 rush with Wilson.

The Penguins pushed back late in the second. Tommy Novak scored after Evgeni Malkin hit the post, and Nicholas Robertson deflected a point shot to cut it to 4-3. Ryan Leonard then scored on a power play early in the third to seal it.

"Dubie's line, I thought, today was flying and we have a good start," Ovechkin said. Coach Spencer Carbery praised that line for winning its matchup against Sidney Crosby.

Thompson made 27 saves, and Silovs made 22. Washington is 2-1-0. Pittsburgh is 2-2-0 under coach Dan Muse, who said he did not like how his team played early.

There was a trade-market angle too. Jordan Kyrou had the main assist on Leonard's goal for his first point with Washington. The Capitals got him from St. Louis in June for Connor McMichael, Milton Gastrin and a first-round pick. Earlier Wednesday, Pittsburgh traded forward Filip Hallander to Edmonton for defenseman Spencer Stastney.

Because it was his last home opener, Wednesday's game was one of a series of final moments for Ovechkin in Washington this season.

What we know: Washington won 5-3, with Wilson and Dubois leading the way.
What we don't: Ovechkin's own stat line was not detailed in the recaps we reviewed.
