The Milwaukee Brewers are headed back to the National League Championship Series. They beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 at Petco Park on Wednesday night to win the best-of-five series three games to one, the Associated Press reported.

Garrett Mitchell was the difference. He drove in Sal Frelick for Milwaukee's first run. He tripled to lead off the fifth and scored the tiebreaking run on Jackson Chourio's single. Then, in the eighth, he caught Manny Machado's 406-foot drive at the short right-center wall to rob a tying home run.

"I didn't really have to jump," Mitchell said. "I knew the wall isn't as high as at other fields."

Machado was blunt. "Two more inches, that ball may have been a homer," he said.

Four Brewers pitchers held San Diego to three hits. Aaron Ashby got the win and Trevor Megill the save, MLB's official box score shows. The Padres' only run came on Fernando Tatis Jr.'s 429-foot homer in the third, the longest postseason homer ever hit at Petco Park by a Padre. Jake Bauers scored Milwaukee's third run on Frelick's sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Chourio, 22, now holds the Brewers' record for career postseason RBIs, with 17, passing Ryan Braun.

The win snapped Milwaukee's 12-game postseason road losing streak dating to 2018. The 103-win Brewers had the majors' best regular-season record. San Diego had climbed from below .500 in late July to the top NL wild card and swept the Cubs before falling.

Next comes a rematch. The Dodgers, who beat Atlanta on Wednesday, swept Milwaukee in last year's NLCS on the way to a second straight World Series title. "Why wouldn't you want another chance?" Mitchell said.

Game 1 is Sunday at American Family Field in Milwaukee, with ace Jacob Misiorowski likely to start. The series airs on FOX and FS1.

What we know: Milwaukee won the series 3-1 and hosts Game 1 Sunday.
