White Sox host Guardians tonight, one win from the ALCS
The Chicago White Sox can close out the Cleveland Guardians in ALDS Game 4 tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern at Rate Field. Chicago leads the series 2-1 after Cleveland won 9-3 Wednesday. The winner faces the Tampa Bay Rays, who swept the Yankees, in the ALCS opener Monday.
Only one Division Series is still alive. The Chicago White Sox lead the Cleveland Guardians two games to one, and Game 4 is tonight at Rate Field in Chicago. First pitch is set for 8 p.m. Eastern on TBS, truTV and HBO Max, according to MLB's schedule.
Cleveland stayed alive Wednesday with a 9-3 win. Guardians pitchers struck out 19 White Sox, a major league postseason single-game record, Field Level Media reported. Jose Ramirez got his first two hits of the series, including a two-run triple, and Jo Adell hit a bases-clearing triple.
The pitching plans are set. Cleveland starts rookie lefty Parker Messick. He lost Game 1, allowing two runs in 4 1/3 innings, but struck out 29 batters in 25 2/3 innings against Chicago in the regular season. MLB.com says Messick posted a 2.56 ERA over 32 starts this year.
Chicago will open with lefty Hagen Smith, 23, as it has before this postseason. He threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in the series opener. Manager Will Venable has leaned on an "all hands on deck" bullpen plan, and Wednesday was Chicago's first loss of the playoffs.
"It's win or go home," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said.
If Cleveland wins, Game 5 is Saturday in Cleveland. A White Sox win would give the franchise its first home series clincher since the 1906 World Series, Field Level Media noted.
The winner meets Tampa Bay. The Rays swept the Yankees on Wednesday and host Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday, the Associated Press reported.
The National League is already set. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat Atlanta 4-1 Wednesday to win their series 3-1. Milwaukee beat San Diego 3-1 to win its series 3-1. The Brewers host the Dodgers in NLCS Game 1 on Sunday.
What we know: Game 4 is tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern, with the White Sox up 2-1.
What we don't: Who will face Tampa Bay in the ALCS.
Where outlets agree Field Level Media and MLB.com both say Messick struck out 29 White Sox in 25 2/3 regular-season innings and line him up for Game 4 in Chicago.
Where they differ Field Level Media puts Messick's ERA against Chicago at 3.00 including the postseason, while MLB.com lists a 2.81 ERA from his four regular-season starts.
