Cowboys' Tyler Smith could return as winless Bucs visit Thursday
Dallas Cowboys guard Tyler Smith could make his season debut Thursday night against the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers if he says he feels ready after thumb surgery, coach Brian Schottenheimer said. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels makes his second start for Tampa Bay. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
The Dallas Cowboys may get their best offensive lineman back on Thursday night. All-Pro guard Tyler Smith could play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if he tells coaches he feels ready, coach Brian Schottenheimer said Tuesday, The Dallas Morning News reported.
"All Tyler's got to do is say, 'Hey Schotty, I feel good' and he'll be out there," Schottenheimer said.
Smith tore a ligament in his left thumb during training camp and had surgery, which put him on injured reserve for the first four games. The team opened his return window Monday. "I think it's possible," Smith said of playing Thursday, DallasCowboys.com reported. He will wear a cast to protect the thumb.
Dallas has other injury questions. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is a "long shot" with a hamstring injury, and cornerback Cobie Durant and tackle Drew Shelton likely won't play, Schottenheimer said. Receiver CeeDee Lamb was a full participant in practice.
Tampa Bay comes in 0-4 after a 17-14 loss to Green Bay. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels will make his second start while Baker Mayfield heals a dislocated right thumb, the Buccaneers' site said. Kicker Chase McLaughlin and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. were among players who did not practice Tuesday. Yahoo Sports noted the Bucs have lost 11 of their last 13 games.
The Cowboys are 2-2. They are 2-0 when they don't turn the ball over and 0-2 when they do, Yahoo said, so turnovers may be the Bucs' best hope.
The history leans Dallas' way. The Cowboys won the first eight meetings from 1976 to 1990, though six of the last eight games have been decided by one score.
Kickoff at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, is 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video, with Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit on the call. Fans in the Tampa market can watch on FOX13, and the game streams on mobile through NFL+.
What we know: Tampa Bay is winless, and Smith is cleared to play if he feels ready.
What we don't: Whether Smith suits up, and the final score.
Where outlets agree The Dallas Morning News and DallasCowboys.com both report that Smith's practice window opened Monday and that he could play Thursday if he feels ready.
Where they differ Smith gets only one real practice in the short week, so whether he plays may not be clear until close to kickoff.
