Emmys leave broadcast TV for Prime Video in six-year deal
The Primetime Emmys are moving to Amazon's Prime Video in a six-year global deal starting in 2027. The show will be free to watch, with no subscription needed. It ends the network "wheel" that rotated the Emmys among ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, and takes the show off broadcast TV for the first time since 1949.
The Emmys are leaving broadcast TV. The Television Academy said Tuesday that Amazon's Prime Video will stream the Primetime Emmys for six years, starting in September 2027.
The show will be free to watch on Prime Video. The Academy said keeping it in front of the paywall was a must, and it will be free in the U.S. and in the more than 240 countries and territories where Prime Video is offered, Variety reported.
The deal ends the "wheel," a system in which ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC took turns airing the show. That setup has run for more than 30 years. NBC aired the most recent Emmys last month, the last show under the old deal. The move also takes the Emmys off broadcast TV for the first time since the awards began in 1949.
Neither side gave the price. Variety's sources put it at about $15 million a year for global rights. Deadline reported a higher figure, between $20 million and $25 million a year. Under the wheel, the networks paid about $8 million to $10 million a year for U.S. rights alone.
Mike Hopkins, who runs Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said the goal is to grow the audience and reach younger viewers, who are more likely to stream than watch regular TV. He said a three-hour show is "plenty" and the telecast will not get longer. Academy chair Cris Abrego said he wants to rethink the show, including its length and categories.
The Emmys tried a single home once before. In 1987, the young Fox network won the rights, and viewership fell to 14.4 million from 35.8 million the year before. Other award shows have also moved to streaming. The Actor Awards went to Netflix, and the Oscars are set to move to YouTube in 2029.
What we know: Prime Video has the Emmys for six years, and they will be free.
What we don't: How much Amazon is paying, and whether the Daytime Emmys will follow.
Where outlets agree Variety and Deadline both report a six-year global deal that makes the Emmys free to watch on Prime Video and ends the four-network rotation.
Where they differ Variety's sources put the fee at about $15 million a year, while Deadline reports $20 million to $25 million a year.
