Officials name teen killed in Winter Haven bus crash, show video
Polk County officials on Tuesday named the Winter Haven High School student killed in Monday's bus crash as 16-year-old Adinaluz Prieto Oyola. Sheriff Grady Judd showed bus video of a white Chevy Malibu crossing the center line and clipping the bus, which then hit a Jeep head-on. The Jeep's 26-year-old driver also died, and no one has been charged.
Polk County officials on Tuesday named the Winter Haven High School student killed in Monday's school bus crash. Superintendent Frederick Heid said she was Adinaluz Prieto Oyola, a 16-year-old 10th grader who had been set to go to her first cheerleading practice that afternoon.
"That was the most difficult conversation I've ever had to have with a family," Heid said, Spectrum Bay News 9 reported.
At a news conference, Sheriff Grady Judd played video from the bus that shows a white Chevy Malibu drift across the yellow center line on Lucerne Park Road just after 6 a.m. and clip the bus near its rear wheels. The hit tore off a tire and pushed the bus into the oncoming lane, where it struck a Jeep head-on and rolled over. The Jeep's driver, a 26-year-old Haines City man headed to work, was killed. "There was absolutely nothing he could do to avoid it," Judd said. A fourth car, a Kia, hit the Malibu.
The Malibu's driver, a 23-year-old nursing student who was also on her way to work, was treated and released from a hospital and has cooperated with investigators, WESH reported. She told investigators she does not remember what happened, according to the Daily Ridge. Judd said all the drivers were going below the speed limit.
Judd praised the bus driver, a 34-year-old mother whose 9-year-old daughter was on board. She freed herself after being pinned and went back to help the 37 students. Thirty-five people were taken to hospitals, and three are still there, and all are expected to fully recover, the Daily Ridge reported.
The crash was Polk County's second school bus wreck in about a month, after a bus with no students aboard crashed in Lakeland on Sept. 3. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating along with the sheriff's office. Such deaths are rare, and National Safety Council data show 110 deaths in school bus-related crashes in 2024, down 14% from 2023.
What we know: Video shows the Malibu crossing the center line first.
What we don't: Why the car drifted, and whether anyone will face charges.
Where outlets agree WESH and Spectrum Bay News 9 both report the sheriff's video shows a white Malibu crossing the center line and clipping the bus before it hit the Jeep.
Where they differ WESH quotes the sheriff saying nothing points to a crime so far, while Bay News 9 reports he said that could change once the traffic homicide investigation is done.
