Kimi Antonelli is closing in on his first Formula 1 title, but he cannot wrap it up this weekend. The Mercedes driver leads teammate George Russell by 84 points heading to the Singapore Grand Prix, GPblog and Motorsport.com reported.

Antonelli finished second last Sunday at the Bahrain Grand Prix, which was held at Malaysia's Sepang circuit this year. Russell's engine failed late in the race, leaving him with no points, while Max Verstappen won for the first time this season, ESPN said.

The standings now show Antonelli with 320 points, Russell with 236 and Lewis Hamilton with 214. Charles Leclerc has 191, and Lando Norris and Verstappen have 188 each.

Why can't Singapore decide it? GPblog did the math. Antonelli can score at most 33 points this weekend from the sprint and the main race, and even if Russell scores none, the gap would be 117 points with six races and 150 points still left.

That makes the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin on Oct. 25 his first real chance, and even then he would need to win everything while Russell and Hamilton score very little.

Singapore brings extra drama. It hosts the season's final sprint race, the first ever held in the city, ESPN said. The night race at Marina Bay is one of the toughest on the calendar because of heat and humidity, and drivers can lose about 3 kilograms during a race. Thundery showers are in the forecast.

Russell won in Singapore last year, and Hamilton has won there four times.

How to watch in the U.S.: Every session streams on Apple TV's F1 channel, ESPN said. The main race starts Sunday at 1 p.m. in Britain, which is 8 a.m. ET, and the sprint runs Saturday morning.

What we know: Antonelli leads by 84 points and cannot clinch in Singapore.
What we don't: Whether Verstappen's Red Bull upgrades will keep him winning.
