Anne Hathaway has another hit. Her psychological thriller "Verity" opened at No. 1 at the North American box office over the weekend, taking in about $32.6 million from 3,510 theaters, according to Deadline and ComingSoon. That beat industry forecasts of $30 million to $35 million at the high end and topped the field by a wide margin.

Worldwide, the film earned about $62.6 million in its first weekend, ComingSoon reported.

Critics were not won over. The film holds a 34% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences rated it much higher, at 69%. Moviegoers polled by CinemaScore gave it a C+, a grade that sometimes signals weaker word of mouth in later weeks.

Still, the opening is a win for Hathaway. It is her fourth opening of more than $20 million this year, ComingSoon noted, a rare streak for any star in a time when fewer films reach that mark.

"Verity" is based on the 2018 novel by Colleen Hoover, one of the best-selling authors of the past decade. Her books found huge audiences on TikTok, where readers share reviews and reactions. The 2024 film "It Ends with Us," also based on a Hoover novel, earned more than $350 million worldwide. That success helped studios bet on more Hoover adaptations.

The story follows a struggling writer hired to finish a series of books by a famous author who cannot write after an accident. While working in the author's home, she finds a disturbing manuscript that suggests dark secrets.

Elsewhere, "Resident Evil" made about $12.5 million in its second weekend, and the Tom Cruise film "Digger" opened to a weak $8 million.

"Verity" is playing in theaters now. A streaming date has not been announced.

What we know: "Verity" opened at No. 1 with about $32.6 million.
What we don't: Whether its mixed reviews will slow ticket sales in the coming weeks.
