Israeli strikes kill at least six in Gaza as Hamas figure targeted
Israeli strikes across Gaza killed at least six Palestinians on Sunday, local reports said, including one aimed at senior Hamas figure Ali al-Amoudi. Israel says it targets militants. The strikes came as Israel prepared to close Gaza and West Bank crossings for the Oct. 7 anniversary.
Violence in Gaza continued on Sunday. Israeli strikes across the territory killed at least six Palestinians, The National reported, while Anadolu Agency counted four killed and 19 wounded by Israeli fire in its tally. Different counts often emerge in the first hours after strikes, as hospitals and officials report separately.
One strike targeted a senior Hamas figure, Ali al-Amoudi, according to The Japan Times. It was not immediately clear whether he was killed. Israel says its strikes aim at militants who threaten its forces or plan attacks. Palestinian officials say civilians keep dying in the strikes.
The deaths came as Israel prepared to close all crossings into Gaza and the West Bank from Oct. 5 to Oct. 7, with limited medical exceptions, Ahram Online reported. Israel cited the anniversary of the Hamas-led attack of Oct. 7, 2023.
That attack killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel, most of them civilians, and about 250 people were taken hostage, according to Israeli figures. Israel's military campaign in Gaza followed. Gaza's health ministry says tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed since then, and much of the territory has been reduced to rubble.
Life in Gaza remains extremely hard. Most of its roughly 2 million people have been forced from their homes at least once. Aid groups say food, clean water and medical supplies remain short, and any closure of crossings slows deliveries further.
The wider region is also on edge. Israel and the United States are at war with Iran, and Yemen's Houthis, who back Hamas, are fighting a new government offensive at home.
Hamas leaders have been targeted repeatedly since 2023, both inside Gaza and abroad.
What we know: At least six people were killed Sunday, and a strike targeted Ali al-Amoudi.
What we don't: Whether al-Amoudi survived, and how many civilians were among the dead.
Where outlets agree The National and The Japan Times both report deadly Israeli strikes in Gaza on Sunday, with one aimed at Hamas figure Ali al-Amoudi.
Where they differ Israel says it is striking militants, while Palestinian officials say the strikes are killing civilians and blocking any return to calm.
