Kim oversees East Sea IRBM launch, claims AI modes
Kim Jong-un oversaw a Saturday intermediate-range missile launch toward the East Sea that Seoul said flew more than 700 kilometers. KCNA and Kim Yo-jong claimed hypersonic AI trajectory modes; Seoul and Washington said the flight stayed within allied detection. The test follows Pyongyang’s rejection of Seoul’s DMZ mine apology demand.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw a Saturday dawn intermediate-range strategic missile firing drill toward the East Sea, KCNA said Sunday, calling it training for a “hypersonic strategic weapon system.” Photos showed Kim with his wife Ri Sol-ju and daughter Ju-ae. Kim said launches demonstrate a “constant mobilization posture” and the “fatality” of offensive means as nuclear deterrent work.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs detected the launch from the Wonsan area and said the missile flew more than 700 kilometers. KCNA claimed a 1,000-kilometer East Sea target hit. Kim Yo-jong earlier called it an intermediate-range strategic missile “capable of changing its flight orbit at a low altitude” with AI introduced, claiming Seoul and Tokyo failed to track “wave-like” modes—claims Seoul’s defense ministry rejected Sunday, saying the missile stayed within South Korean and U.S. detection and interception range and violated U.N. Security Council resolutions. AFP quoted Seoul experts saying AI can aid targeting but that Pyongyang’s perfect-hit claims remain unverified.
The launch came amid a DMZ spat: Seoul blamed a Sept. 21 mine blast that wounded three South Korean soldiers on North Korean mines and demanded an apology. Pyongyang denied responsibility, called Seoul “despicable,” and warned of “merciless” retaliation. Seoul, the United States, and Japan said they are sharing missile data and keeping a robust combined defense posture.
For U.S. forces in Korea and Japan, the stake is another IRBM test under contested hypersonic and AI claims. Engage: KCNA photo releases, Seoul JCS notices, and any further DMZ statements.
What we know:
Kim oversaw a Saturday East Sea IRBM/hypersonic test Seoul tracked beyond 700 km; KCNA and Kim Yo-jong claimed AI modes; Seoul/U.S. say it remained detectable; the DMZ mine apology demand remains rejected.
What we don’t:
Independent verification of AI guidance claims, exact missile variant, or whether further launches follow this weekend.
Where outlets agree Yonhap, AFP, and Seoul’s Joint Chiefs agree North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Saturday under Kim’s supervision.
Where they differ Pyongyang claims AI hypersonic modes that allies failed to track while Seoul’s defense ministry says the missile stayed within allied detection and interception range.
