U.S. measles nears 4,000 cases as Pennsylvania hits 977
CDC tallies about 3,887 confirmed U.S. measles cases and 42 outbreaks as of early October, CIDRAP and Contagion Live report. Pennsylvania alone has 977 cases after adding more than 100 in a week. About 95% of patients are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccine status.
The United States is closing in on 4,000 confirmed measles cases in 2026, a level that would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Contagion Live, citing CDC’s Oct. 1 update, puts the national total at 3,887 — up 228 cases, or about 6.2%, from the prior week. CIDRAP’s matching weekly review notes the same surge and says the country could cross 4,000 as soon as next week if the pace holds. CDC now lists 42 outbreaks, two more than the week before. Cases have been confirmed in 45 states plus New York City and Washington, D.C., with only a small share tied to international visitors.
Pennsylvania remains the national hot spot. The state health department told CDC it logged 102 new infections in a week and 34 in two days, bringing the 2026 total to 977, CIDRAP reports. Lancaster County leads with 391 cases, followed by Mifflin, Chester, Jefferson, and Snyder. Unlike the national age mix — where most patients are children and teens — about 69% of Pennsylvania’s cases are adults. Roughly one in five Pennsylvania patients has needed a hospital bed. Other states are still climbing: Wisconsin, Ohio, Utah, and Kentucky all posted fresh jumps in the same CDC week.
Public-health officials keep stressing that overall risk stays low for people with two MMR doses, while unvaccinated households drive local clusters. Early signs — high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes — usually appear 7 to 14 days after exposure, with a blotchy rash a few days later. Call ahead before walking into a clinic if you may be infectious. Parents planning fall school events or flights through outbreak counties should confirm vaccine records now, not after an exposure notice arrives.
Backstory: the U.S. declared measles eliminated in 2000. Case totals already surpassed the full-year 2025 count of 2,289 earlier this summer and keep rising into the final quarter.
What we know:
National confirmed cases are near 3,887 with 42 outbreaks; Pennsylvania has 977 cases and remains the largest state cluster.
What we don’t:
Whether next week’s CDC update will cross 4,000, and how many additional local clusters will surface before school holidays.
Where outlets agree CIDRAP and Contagion Live, both citing CDC, agree U.S. measles cases are near 3,900 with 42 outbreaks and Pennsylvania near 1,000.
Where they differ State dashboards and CDC’s rolling national total can disagree by a few dozen cases day to day as late lab confirmations land.
