Two National League and American League wild-card openers are now in the books on Tuesday, with two more still unresolved late Tuesday night.

In Atlanta, Austin Riley's three-run homer off closer Jhoan Duran in the eighth lifted the Braves past the Phillies 5-3 in National League wild-card Game 1 at Truist Park, the Associated Press reported through CBS Sports. Chris Sale struck out nine over 6 1/3 innings; J.T. Realmuto's two-run triple had put Philadelphia ahead 3-2 in the seventh before Riley flipped the lead. Raisel Iglesias closed it. Atlanta leads the best-of-three 1-0; Game 2 is Wednesday with Tyler Mahle expected against Cristopher Sánchez.

In Houston, the White Sox beat the Astros 6-3 in American League wild-card Game 1 at Daikin Park, per the AP box on CBS Sports and NBC Sports' FINAL update. Chicago led 3-0 after two innings in a 13-pitcher bullpen game. Rookie Hagen Smith opened with three scoreless frames; Colson Montgomery's solo homer made it 4-0; Sam Antonacci drove in two. Pinch-hitter Nelson Velázquez's two-run shot cut Houston's deficit to 5-2, and an eighth-inning error let the Astros pull within 6-3. Chicago leads the series 1-0. Hunter Brown is lined up for Houston in do-or-die Game 2 Wednesday against Sean Burke. The White Sox are in the postseason for the first time since 2021 after consecutive 100-loss seasons; the Astros reached October at 81-81.

Still unfinished Tuesday night: Red Sox at Yankees (evening window; Yankees had taken an early lead, but no final score was confirmed across desks) and Cubs at Padres (late West Coast window). New York still opens without Aaron Judge on the AL wild-card roster after a calf strain, with Giancarlo Stanton and Trent Grisham activated — covered in a separate card.

How to watch: NBC, Peacock, and MLB national partners carry the remaining Game 1s; MLB.com's postseason hub lists first pitches, TV windows, and radio/app feeds. Series continue Wednesday and, if needed, Thursday. Only the Braves-Phillies and White Sox-Astros Game 1s are final here; the Red Sox-Yankees and Cubs-Padres boxes were still open.
